He graduated in 1968 from Odessa High School, where he was valedictorian and the outstanding science student of his senior class. He was also a letterman in basketball and band. He excelled playing the snare drum, helping the school’s drum ensemble, concert band and marching band earn several “I” ratings in district and state competitions. He also earned the Senior English Award and was named to the National Honor Society and a delegate to Missouri Boys State. He served as a Little League basketball coach during high school and later as a youth-league baseball coach.

He was a member of the Alpha Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, serving as Chapter Secretary as a senior. He was named to the Dean’s List and was a Regents’ Scholarship recipient.

Following graduation, Larry worked as a substitute teacher in the Odessa School District and as a private tutor while taking post-baccalaureate classes in education, mathematics and science at CMSU. He began working at Sears, Roebuck and Co., in Independence, Mo., in 1978 and spent a total of 15 years with the company in various computer-related, training, and sales positions. He enjoyed reading and listening to jazz music. He was also an avid sports fan, following the Royals, the Chiefs, college football and basketball, and the Odessa Bulldogs.
