He is preceded in death by his parents; three of his brothers, Elbert, Albert and Eldon; his wife, Lena Doris Dunkle; two of his daughters, Angela Darlene Dunkle and Karan Sue Bruno; and grandson, Martin (Marty) Osborne Lynn, Jr.

Alvin was a military veteran, his service in the Korean War, from 1951 until 1953 was recognized with a Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Stars, Combat Infantry Badge and United Nations Service Medal. When Alvin returned from service, he worked at Armco Steel Company in Kansas City, Missouri before starting the family dairy farm in Dover.

Tradition, family, and community were the most important things to Alvin. He grew up in a slower, simpler time, when a boy's life was composed of wandering creeks and learning life lessons from his father on the farm. In his later years, Alvin most enjoyed spending time with family and sharing stories from his youth and military service. He was both the glue that kept his family together in tough times, and the center of attention in joyous times. Because of this, he was a well known and respected figure in the community. He will be remembered for his wit, strength, and genuineness.
